Autocross
Sunday the 31st - at Altamont Speedway
Autocross Chair, Crazy Mike (MOASF)
Autocrossing is fun
An autocross is a timed, moderate speed event, pitting driver and Mini against the clock and the course. Cars run one at a time on a paved course lined with pylons. Cars will be scored in several different classes, depending upon speed potential. Its your chance to squeal the tires and make noise without incurring the wrath of the police. Although speeds attained in an autocross are not very high you will typically not get out of second gear the tightness of corners will make it seem as though you are going faster, thus increasing the challenge and thrill.
To reduce the time spent waiting in line, participants will be divided into six run groups. Colored time cards will be available (first come, first served) at registration signifying the following run times: 9:00 10:00 am; 10:00 11:00 am, 11:00 Noon, 12:30 1:30pm; 1:30 2:30pm; 2:30 3:30pm. Those wishing to participate in the Autocross should pick up a time card for the time you would like to run, and fill out the information on the card before the autocross. Course walkthroughs will be at 8:30 and noon.
For beginner autocrossers, this is a great way to get an introduction to the sport. There is little pressure, and the improvement the beginner will usually see from their first to last run can be very rewarding.
So far the top time of day for Mini Meet West autocross has always been awarded to a classic Mini. This year, will the new MINI win bragging rights?
This years event is planned to take place at Altamont Raceway. Altamont has grandstands, concessions, restrooms, and other amenities that will make it enjoyable for spectators as well as participants. So, even if you dont want to run, you are encouraged to come out and watch.
